Flag Day is often overlooked. That’s partly because it lands in the middle of two major holidays: Memorial Day and Labor Day. In addition, many people have busier schedules during the summer months, when school’s out and summer vacations are in full swing.
Still, Flag Day is an important holiday that honors the symbol of our American nation. Use this guide to create a memorable and insightful Flag Day for you and your family.
A Brief History
Flag Day falls on the 14th of June every year. It’s a time to not only honor the flag itself, but also to remember the official adoption of this country’s symbol that occurred in 1777. In fact, the week of Flag Day is recognized as “Flag Week,” and people are encouraged to display flags in and around homes, by wearing lapel pins, and other signs of patriotic involvement.
Though various communities held individual celebrations throughout the years, it wasn’t until 1946 that the observance of Flag Day became official by an act of Congress. Notably, Flag Day also shares a birthday with the formation of the U.S. Army.
How to Celebrate Flag Day
As mentioned, the best way to celebrate Flag Day is to simply display your American flag with pride. For instance, you could fly the flag from the front porch of your custom home. You could also decorate with patriotic bunting. Or, you might choose to wear a pin, clothing featuring the flag’s colors, or another idea that respects the station of the flag.
Some communities host Flag Day events that feature parades and other types of celebration. You could also create your own festivities with a barbecue, family party, or other idea.
Honoring the Country Every Day
Though lesser known as other major holidays such as Memorial Day, Veterans Day, Independence Day, and others, Flag Day still holds a special place in the hearts and minds of many Americans who strive to honor and celebrate symbols of our nation’s strength and positive qualities. That dedication to country pride can easily be exercised all year round when you live in a dynamic and inclusive neighborhood that demonstrates and embraces America’s best qualities.
